My first introduction to yoga was inspired by the Beatles in the late 60’s. I took courses in Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi in Humbolt County, California. He introduced me to mantra, chanting, hatha yoga, meditation and scriptural study. And for a “wild child” it was the beginning of seeing myself and my life from the “inside out”- a great revelation!
After that I moved to Santa Barbara to complete my Masters in Education. At times I would go to the Dharma Dhatu to meditate. I couldn’t believe my good fortune one day when his Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived. His inner light and great joy convinced me I was on the right path.
My good luck continued when I met my boyfriend who was a yoga practitioner. He invited me to his yoga class one night and it was love at first sight…. I have never gotten off my mat since!!!
My teachers were Pheldea Fleming and James Brodsky-students of Desikachar and Krishnamurti. Their classes were an amazing balance of dynamism and grace. On weekends we would go hear Krishnamurtis’ talks in the Olive Groves in Ojai…. I thought I died and went to heaven!
I soon escalated from taking 1 to 4 classes a week. I couldn’t believe how strong and peaceful I felt . After a few years my teachers deceided to leave the area . Heartbroken and with no other teachers in the town,(can ya believe it) I moved to San Francisco to attend the Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Institute to become a yoga teacher myself- dream come true!
During the next years of training I had the opportunity to take yoga intensives with BKS Iyengar in Pune, India . And from his brilliant intellect and great heart, I began to see the true healing power of yoga for people with physical and mental pain, chronic illness and disease.
After graduating from the Iyengar Institute I was invited by SYDA Yoga and Meditation Foundation to teach yoga classes, workshops and teachers’ training world-wide for the next 10 years. During that time I had the great honor to study with Meditation Master Gurumayi Chidvilasananda whose wisdom, grace and teachings transformed my heart and my life.
Shortly after that my life took an unexpected turn. My younger brother died and I arrived back in Connecticut to support my grieving parents. I was asked to teach some yoga classes and thus began “yoga sangha”- a yoga community nestled in the beautiful Northwestern Hills of Connecticut.
Then in 2000 John Friend was in the process of founding a new style of yoga called Anusara. I was so inspired by its alignment principles for the inner and outer body that I deceided to become certified in this methodology. I also began meditation studies with Paul Muller-Ortega Phd: one of academias’ highly regarded scholars in the field of Eastern Religion.
I continued to teach Anusara Yoga classes, workshops and Immersion trainings for the next 10 years until the community unraveled in 2012.
A short time later, I got introduced to Life Coaching by one of my fellow yoga teachers. I was so surprisingly impressed by the results that I became a certified life coach myself. I feel that coaching and yoga definitely compliment each other and I am so happy to beable to offer that to my students as well.
Recently, I began a specialty in Mind/Body Coaching. The tools and practices from this new training are nothing short of miraculous!. So I am “over the moon” to beable to serve people in another new expanded way.
The wealth and experience I have accumulated over the past 4 decades will continue to grow inside me. I am so grateful to all of my beloved teachers for their knowledge, support and love. I am continuing to listen to the “true teacher” within to inform my teaching and my life. And it is my great joy to continue to share that with all of you.

Namaste, Sarala
